John Patteson Scott aka Thomas Henry Brady
John Scott Patteson (Service No 685), according to his enlistment documents, was born in Hull, England around 1891.
Using the name John Scott Patteson, Thomas Brady enlisted, stating that he was single, and 23 years of age. He was living in Wollongong, N.S.W. and was working as a seaman and machinist. John also stated that he had served for 5 years with the 3rd East Yorks Yeomanry. He listed his sister, Mary Shepardson, of Hull, England as a next of kin.
John embarked from Sydney on HMAT A23 Suffolk with F Company, 2nd Battalion, on 18th October 1914.
After training in Egypt he arrived on Gallipoli on 25th April and saw service there until admitted to hospital on Mudros sick on 4th June 1915. He rejoined his unit in Egypt on 29th December 1915.
John was then sent on to France, arriving on 28th March 1916, and saw service on the Western Front as a signaller with 2nd Battalion.
On 4th May 1917 he was admitted to hospital in England suffering from shell shock.
He was returned to Australia in September 1917 and finally discharged medically unfit on 24th May 1918.
In 1937 he was living in Queensland when he wrote to the Army advising them of his real name, Thomas Henry Brady.
