Ernest Nicholls (Service No 2694) was born at Marrickville, N.S.W. in 1886.

In 1910 he married Ethel Lucas at Kiama, N.S.W.

At enlistment Ernest was 30 years old, employed as a horse driver, and lived at Kiama.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A24 Benalla with 5th Reinforcements, 38th Battalion, on 9th November 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 9th January 1917 and Ernest joined 38th Battalion in France on 25th April 1917.

He saw service on the Western Front until he became ill and was admitted to hospital on 4th November 1917 for a short time.

Ernest was wounded in action on 9th April 1918 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left arm.  

He was returned to Australia in July 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 27th February 1919.

Ernest died in 1962 and is buried at Woronora Cemetery, N.S.W.

Ernest is commemorated on the Kiama Uniting Church Honour Roll and on the Kiama Memorial Arch and Honour Rolls.
