Robert Rankin (Service No 3680) was born in Helensburgh, N.S.W. around 1896.

At enlistment Robert was single, 21 years old, lived at Thirroul, N.S.W. and worked as a labourer. 

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A28 Miltiades with 10th Reinforcements, 53rd Battalion, on 2nd August 1917.  The troops arrived in England on 2nd October 1917 and Robert was admitted to hospital a few days later with mumps.

He was taken on strength of 33rd Battalion in France on 12th February 1918 and saw service on the Western Front until he was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of trench fever on 28th July 1918.  He returned to his unit in France on 10th November 1918.

Robert was returned to Australia in July 1919 and discharged on 1st November 1919.

In 1921 he married Elsie Hicks at Bulli, N.S.W.

Robert died at Parramatta in 1971 and is buried in Woronora Cemetery.
