Charles Ebenezer Tolhurst
Charles Tolhurst (Service No 6191) was born in Penrith, N.S.W. around 1884.
On 12th September 1905 he married Catherine Veigel at Woonona, N.S.W. and they went on to have 6 children.
In 1915 Charles enlisted and was to embark with Mining Company Reinforcements on A38 Ulysses on 20th February the following year, but for some reason he did not embark.
When he re-enlisted on 24th Jamuary 1916, Charles was 31 years old and working as a butcher. The family lived at Bulli. N.S.W.
Following an enquiry as to why he did not embark at his 1st enlistment, Charles was accepted into the AIF and finally embarked from Sydney on HMAT A11 Ascanius with 17th Reinforcements, 20th Battalion, on 25th October 1916. He arrived in England on 28th December 1916 and after some time in hospital and punishments finally arrived in France on 6th December 1917.
Charles saw service on the Western Front with 20th Battalion until the end of the war.
He returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged on 20th June 1919.
He died in Sydney in 1948.
