Oswald Henry Bailey
Oswald Bailey was born in Goulburn, N.S.W.
At enlistment, Oswald was single, 30 years old, was employed as an engineer, and lived at Geelong, Vic. Oswald nominated his mother, Mrs A Baily of Dapto, N.S.W. as his next-of-kin. Oswald had served 3 years in the Australian Garrison Artillery.
He embarked from Melboune on HMAT A14 Euripides with 24th Battalion, Headquarters, on 10th May 1915 as a Corporal, having been promoted on 8th May.
After the troops arrived in Egypt Oswald was sent to Gallipoli, arriving on 30th August 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant, in the field, on 6th October 1915. He remained on Gallipoli until the evacuation.
In Egypt he was transferred to 6th Machine Gun Company on 9th March 1916. He arrived in France on 24th March 1916 and saw service on the Western Front until 4th July 1916 when he was wounded and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of serious gun shot wounds to his buttocks, left arm, and ear.
Oswald was returned to Australia in February 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 30th May 1917 due to deafness and damage to his arm.
Oswald married Sarah Jean Carter.
He died in 1939 as a result of his war injuries, and is buried at Woronora Cemetery, N.S.W.
Oswald's service is recorded on the Dapto Public School Honour Roll, N.S.W.
