John Crowther (Service No 396) was born in Hackmondwyke, England.

He married Mary Langdon on 20th October 1906 and they arrived in Australia in 1912.

At enlistment John was 34 years old, worked as a miner, and lived at Corrimal, N.S.W.  

He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A62 Wandilla with B Company, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, on 6th June 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 26th July 1916 and John joined B Company in France on 24th November 1916.

He saw service on the Western Front and was promoted to Corporal on 7th June 1917.

On 3rd July 1917 John was wounded in action and was sent to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his scalp and right eye.  This was a serious injury and he was returned to Australia in June 1918. John was discharged medically unfit on 18th September 1918.

He and Mary raised 7 children.  John he died in Sydney in 1961.

John's service is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
