Myer Lazarus
Myer Lazarus (Service No 2379) was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment, Myer was single, 22 years old, employed as a station hand, and lived at Randwick, N.S.W.
Although he had served in the Royal Australian Navy as Seaman Lazarus (Service No 4263) from 19th August 1914 to 21st April 1916, he did not mention this on his AIF enlistment papers.
Myer embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 4th Reinforcements, 1st Pioneer Battalion on 22nd August 1916. The troops arrived in England on 13th October 1916 and Myer joined his unit in France on 28th February 1917.
He saw service on the Western Front until 24th March 1917 when he was wounded and evacuated to England for treatment of a injuries to his back after a bombing. He returned to his unit on 15th November 1917.
On 9th February 1918 Myer was transferred to 101st Howitzer Battery, 1st Field Artillery Brigade and served with them until 10th May 1918 when he was wounded a second time. He was again evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of a wound to his head.
Myer was returned to Australia in September 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 12th November 1918.
Myer claimed his service in the navy well after the war, when enquiring about the issue of the 1914/1915 Star. His records do not show if he was was issued with the Star.
Myer also served in World War 2 in the Merchant Navy.
In 1944 Myer married Ena Webb at Manly, N.S.W.
He died in 1962.
