Arthur Lear (Service No 2630) was born in Bendigo, Victoria in 1895.

At enlistment Arthur was single, 19 years old, worked as a blacksmith, and lived with his mother at Corrimal, N.S.W.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A54 Runic with 8th Reinforcements, 13th Battalion, on 9th August 1915.  He arrived on Mudros on 23rd October 1915 but it is not clear if he saw active service on Gallipoli.

On 25th January 1916 he was transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps and served in Egypt and the Middle East. Arthur had numerous admissions to hospital in Egypt, suffering from malaria and tachycardia.

He was returned to Australia in March 1917 and discharged medically unfit with an irritable heart on 28th May 1917.

In 1917 he married Lavinia Watson in Wollongong, N.S.W.
