Wilfred Gardner (Service No 783) was born in Consett, Durham, England and arrived in Australia with his family in 1912.

At enlistment Wilfred single, 25 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W.  Wilfred was the third Gardner brother to enlist.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A24 Benalla with C Company, 35th Battalion, on 1st May 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 9th July 1916 and Wilfred joined 35th Battalion in France on 21st November 1916.

He saw service on the Western Front and while there are no reports of any wounding on his file, he was admitted to hospital in France and England due to illness.

Wilfred was discharged from the AIF in London on 2nd August 1919 and remained in England.

On 9th September 1919 he married Emily Woodcock and they had one child.  Wilfred died in Durham age 76.
