William Philpot
William Philpot (Service No 624) was born in Newcastle, N.S.W.
William had attended Woonona Public School in N.S.W. and spent 4 years in the Senior Cadets.
At enlistment William was single, 23 years old, worked as a grocer,and lived in Lithgow, N.S.W.
He embarked friom Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with B Company, 18th Battalion, on 25th June 1915 and soon after arriving in Egypt was sent on to Gallipoli.
On 22nd August 1915 William was evacuated to hospital at Mudros for treatment of abrasions to his face. He was promoted to Corporal the next day and returned to Gallipoli on 28th September 1915 where he served until the evacuation.
William arrived in France on 25th March 1916 and took part in the battle at Pozieres where, on 4th August 1916, he was wounded a second time . He was evacuated to hospital in France for treatment of a gun shot wound to his scalp and neck. William returned to his unit on 27th August with the rank of Sergeant, having been promoted on 16th August.
On 4th January 1917 he was promoted to Company Sergeant Major.
On 3rd May 1917 William was wounded a third time and evacuated to hospital for treatment of a shell wound to his right leg, and returned to his unit on 28th October 1917.
On 4th January 1918 William was sent to Cadet School. On 1st August he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant.
On 31st August 1918 William was wounded a fourth time.
On 1st November 1918 promoted to Lieutenant.
He was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged on 25th July 1919.
William married Jessie Stanford in Orange, N.S.W. in 1920 and they raised 2 children.
William died in Sydney in 1949 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
William's brother, James Temple Philpot (Service No 1084), died in France after being wounded in battle.
