John Carrick (Service No 5989) was born in Bulli, N.S.W.

John enlisted when the Waratah March came to the Illawarra region.  He was single, 27 years old, and worked as a miner.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A18 Wiltshire with 1st Battalion on 22nd August 1916 and arrived in England on 13th October 1916.

On 18th December 1916 he joined the Battalion in France and saw service on the Western Front until 27th May 1917 when he was admitted to hospital with trench fever. He did not return to his unit until 23rd May 1918.

While in England John faced a number of charges for being absent without leave and the fact that he married Ada Edmonds in London after the war may have been the reason.  John and Ada married on 3rd December 1919 and returned to Australia in February 1920.  John was discharged on 7th April 1920.

The couple settled in Bulli and John returned to work at the mines.

John at Bulli in October 1956.  He is commemorated on the Woonona Public School Roll of Honour.

John's brother Thomas also served.
