Archie John Steers
Archie Steers (Service No 999) was born in Brighton, England around 1885.
At enlistment Archie was single, 30 years old, worked as an assistant fitter, and lived at Port Kembla, N.S.W.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A35 Berrima with C Company, 20th Battalion, on 25th June 1915. The troops arrived in Egypt and Archie was sent on to Gallipoli where he saw service.
Archie arrived in France on 25th March 1916 and saw service with the battalion at Pozieres until he was wounded on 27th August 1916. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his leg. His fighting over, he served in England until he returned to Australia in January 1918.
In June 1917, while still in England, Archie married Alice Watts.
He was discharged medically unfit on 15th April 1918 due to a hernia.
Archie and Alice returned to Australia, however they divorced in 1932.
