Daniel Stewart Hotchkis
Daniel Hotchkis (Service No 1565) was born in Helensburgh, N.S.W. around 1896.
At enlistment Daniel was single, 19 years old, employed as an electric motor driver and had served 4 years in the Senior Cadets and Militia.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana with 1st Reinforcements, 30th Battalion, on 9th November 1915. After arriving in Egypt Daniel joined A Company, 30th Battalion, on 24th January 1916.
On 23rd June 1916 Daniel was sent on to France. He was admitted to hospital sick on 30th June 1916 returning to his unit on 3rd July 1916.
Daniel fought at Fromelles and served on the Western Front until 4th May 1917 when he was wounded in action and admitted to hospital in France for treatment of a wound to his neck; he returned to duty on 23rd May 1917.
Daniel was wounded a second time on 30th September 1918 when he was gassed.
He was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged on 18th July 1919.
In 1925 Daniel married Doris Flynn in Sydney.
He died in 1973.
