Mark Rowley (Service No 6838) was born in Shepherds Bush, London. On 30th June 1906 he married Olive Cundy in Devon, England.

When Mark enlisted he was 36 years old and worked as a labourer in Wollongong, NSW. He had served three years in the Territorials. After enlisting in Kiama, NSW, he embarked on HMAT Port Nicholson with 22nd Reinforcements, 13th Battalion on 8th November 1916.

He arrived in England on 10th January 1917 and joined 13th Battalion in France on 15th February 1917. Mark was wounded in action on 11th April 1917 fighting at Reincourt, while many 13th Battalion men were taken prisoner that day. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left knee, returning to his unit on 27th July 1917.

Mark saw service on the Western Front and was wounded a second time on 4th July 1918 at Hamel. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left thigh. He returned to his unit on 8th November 1918 but the war ended three days later.

Mark returned to Australia in September 1919 and was discharged on 1st January 1920.
