Henry embarked on HMAT A35 Berrima with A Company, 20th Battalion on 25th June 1915. After arriving in Egypt he was sent to Gallipoli and remained there until the evacuation.

While in Egypt, Henry was admitted to hospital sick but he stowed away to get to France. He arrived in France on 26th March 1916 and was back with his unit on 13th April 1916. Henry had numerous hospital admissions for sickness as well as incidents of discipline that took him out of the fighting.
