Percy Uden
Percy Uden (Service No 2219) was born in Sydney, N.S.W. in 1896. The youngest of four sons, born to Sarah Ann Uden.
Sarah died in 1919 and Percy was taken in by the authorities. He was sent to Marshall Mount, N.S.W. and attended school at the Marshall Mount Public School. In 1913, Percy was sentenced to 3 months hard labour, in Wollongong Gaol, Wollongong, N.S.W. He was minding the three year old son of Francis James, of Unanderra, N.S.W. when he stole some money. He had returned to Balmain and was arrested there.
At enlistment, Percy was single, 19 years old and worked as a labourer. He listed his brother Charles, of Balmain, N.S.W. as his next of kin. Percy embarked on HMAT A63 Karoola with 2nd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 6th June 1915.
After arriving in Egypt, Percy was sent to Gallipoli. Percy was killed in action at Lone Pine, Gallipolli, between 7th and 14th August 1915. He is buried in Lone Pine Cemetery, Plot II, Row B, Grave 38.
Percy is commemorated on the Marshall Mount Public School Roll of Honour.
