John James Alfred Salisbury
John Salisbury (Service No 960) was born in Bulli, N.S.W.
At enlistment. John was single, 22 years old, employed as a driver, and lived at Woonona, N.S.W. John had served 2 years 6 months in the Militia.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A39 Port Macquarie with the rank of Corporal with 2nd Light Horse Brigade Train on 21st December 1914. The troops arrived in Egypt, but it is unclear if John was sent to Gallipoli or remained in Egypt.
On 21st January 1916 he was transferred to the Camel Corps.
On 18th March 1917 he was mentioned in despatches and on 26th March 1917 was presented the Bronze Medal for Military Valour (Italy) by the King of Italy.
On 13th August 1917 John was transferred to 33rd Company Army Service Corps and on 13th December 1917 he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, then further promoted to Lieutenant on 1st April 1918.
In 1918 John was granted leave to return to Australia as his father had died in 1917 and he was needed to attend to his father's affairs. Once he had tended to family matters he returned to Egypt and served until the war ended. John finally returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged on 12th January 1920.
On 28th February 1920 he married Mary Oldroyd at Bulli and they had one child.
After the war John worked as a train driver and lived at Greenacre in Sydney where he died in 1982.
John is commemorated on the Woonona Public School Roll of Honour along with his brother William and cousin Joseph.
