Ernest Dare (Service No 3284) was born in Dapto, N.S.W. around 1894.

At enlistment Ernest was single, 21 years old, and worked as a blacksmith.  He embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A48 Seang Bee with 11th Reinforcement, 15th Battalion, on 25th October 1915.

After arriving in Egypt he was sent to France and arrived there on 8th June 1916.

Ernest saw service on the Western Front and was fighting at Bullecourt when he was wounded on 11th April 1917 and admitted to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his shoulder.  He returned to his unit on 29th May 1917.

On 10th September 1917 Ernest was promoted to Lance Corporal.

On 1st March 1918 he was wounded a second time but remained on duty.

On 3rd May 1918 Ernest was wounded a third time, receiving severe wounds to his left arm and back.  He was evacuated to hospital in England and returned to Australia in March 1919.

Ernest was discharged from the AIF on 24th June 1919.

In 1927 he married Lavinia Payne in Nowra.

Ernest died in Nowra in 1969.

Ernest's brother Albert also served.

Both brothers are commemorated on the Dapto Public School Roll of Honour.
