Arnold Ashton Smith
Arnold Smith (Service No 905) was born in Walcha, N.S.W. in 1893. He attended Wollongong Public School and served as a signaler in the Junior and Senior Cadets.
At enlistment Arnold was single, 21 years old, worked as a farmer, and was living at Haberfield in Sydney.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A23 Suffolk with H Company, 2nd Battalion, on 18th October 1914. The troops arrived in Egypt in December 1914 and on 13th January 1915 Arnold was transferred to 2nd Battalion Headquarters as a signaller. He arrived on Gallipoli on 25th April and served until 18th May 1915 when he was admitted to hospital sick, but he returned to his duties on 30th May.
Arnold was killed in action at Lone Pine sometime between 7th and 14th August 1915 and is buried in Lone Pine Cemetery: Special Memorial Row C No 134.
