John McCann
John McCann (Service No 2174) was born in Belfast, Ireland.
When John enlisted at Liverpool, near Sydney, he was single, 25 years old, worked as a labourer, and lived at Corrimal, N.S.W.
He embarked on HMAT A8 Argyllshire, with the 4th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 30th September 1915. On 10th January 1916 he was posted to D company arriving at Marseilles, France on 23rd March 1916.
John saw service on the Western Front and served at the battle for Pozieres in 1916 as well as taking part in the battles at Bullecourt and Menin Road in 1917.
On 17th December 1916 he was admitted to hospital in France with a sore right knee and returned to his unit on 15th February 1917.
On 18th May 1918 John was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right arm.
He was returned to Australia on the 15th September, 1918, on board the HT Arawa. After further treatment in Australia he was discharged as medically unfit on the 3rd September 1920.
On the 11th September, 1920 he married Cathie Rowe with whom he had 4 children.
