Harcourt Macfarlane (Service No 2690) was born in Dubbo, N.S.W. around 1898.

At enlistment Harcourt was single, 18 years old, worked as a baker and lived at Port Kembla, N.S.W.; previously he had served in the Cadets.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A40 Ceramic with 6th Reinforcements, 45th Battalion, on 7th October 1916.  The troops arrived in England on 21st November 1916 and Harcourt joined 45th Battalion in France on 18th January 1917.

He saw service on the Western Front.  Harcourt was wounded in action at the Battle of Messines and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his left leg.  The treatment was not successful and his leg was amputated on 24th September 1917.

He was returned to Australia in November 1917 and discharged medically unfit on 12th February 1918.

In 1919 Harcourt married Ida Dines at Hornsby, N.S.W. and they had one child.

Harcourt died in 1940 and is buried in Macquarie Park Cemetery.
