Thomas Rooney
Thomas Rooney (Service No 3917) was born in Strathaven, Scotland around 1867.
At enlistment, he was married, 39 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Thirroul, N.S.W. He listed his wife Mary, as his next of kin.
Thomas embarked on HMAT A7 Medic, with 2nd Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, on 30th December 1915. After a stop in Egypt, he joined 2nd Battalion, A Company, in France, on 27th July 1916. Thomas saw service at Pozieres and Mouquet Farm, and on 19th September 1916, was detached to 3rd Canadian Tunnel Company. He served with them until 8th November 1916, when he was admitted to hospital in England, with myalgia.
Thomas was returned to Australia, in October 1917, due to his age and ill health. He was discharged medically unfit, due to rheumatism and myalgia, on 1st December 1917.
In 1937, he wrote to the Army, listing his address as Pozieres Cottage, Austinmer, N.S.W.
Thomas is commemorated on the Thirroul War Memorial, Thirroul, N.S.W.
