John Robert Hall (Service No 5336) was born in Helensburgh, N.S.W.

At enlistment, he was single, 22 years old and working as a clerk. John embarked on HMAT A23 Suffolk, with September 1916 Reinforcement, on 29th September 1916.

He arrived in England on 2nd December 1916, and joined 1st Tunnel Company in France, on 21st January 1917. He saw service on the Western Front as a miner.

On 14th March 1918, John was wounded in action. The bombardment prior to the German breakthrough in March 1918, contained gas shells, which was the cause of John's injury. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment, returning to his unit on 25th July 1918. John has some AWOL charges on his file.

On 24th May 1919, he married Margaret Knox, in Durham, England. Matgaret and John returned to Australia in May 1920. He was discharged on 10th September 1920. John and Margaret went on to have 10 children.

John died in Concord Hospital, N.S.W. in 1972.
