James Francis Savage
James Francis Savage (Service No 3684) was born in Belfast, Ireland, about 1890, arriving in Australia, with his family, in August 1892.
In 1911, he married Kathleen Makin, in Wollongong, N.S.W. and they had 3 children.
When James enlisted in Wollongong, he was 26 years old, worked as an electrician, and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W.
He embarked on HMAT A69 Warialda, with Tunnelling Company 4, Headquarters 1, on 22nd May 1916. He arrived in England on 18th July 1916, and arrived in France on 27th September 1916, where he was posted to the Electrical and Mechanical Company.
On 18th September 1917, James was wounded in action, and admitted to hospital for treatment from the effects of a gas attack. He returned to his unit on 17th November 1917.
James saw service on the Western Front until the war ended.
On 29th November 1918, he was admitted to hospital with influenza.
He was returned to Australia in April 1919 and discharged on 10th May 1919.
James died in Wollongong, N.S.W., on 5th July 1952.
