Harold Stanley Gater
Harold Stanley Gater (Service No 3802), was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.
At enlistment, in Armidale, N.S.W., he was single, 19 years old, and worked as a bush labourer.
Harold embarked on HMAT A54 Runic, with 20th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement, on 20th January 1916.
He arrived in Egypt, on 26th February 1916, and was admitted to hospital in Cairo, with influenza soon after.
Harold arrived in France, on 2nd May 1916, and served on the Western Front. On 6th June 1916, he was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his head. He returned to his unit on 10th December 1916.
On 19th February 1917, Harold was promoted to Lance Corporal.
He was wounded a second time, on 20th September 1917, and admitted to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his knee. He was back on duty on 20th November 1917.
On 14th April 1918, Harold was promoted to Corporal, and served until the end of the war.
In May 1919, he was returned to Australia and discharged on 27th August 1919.
In 1923, he married Ivy Crabbe, in Grafton, N.S.W.
Harold died in 1970.
