James saw service on the Western Front with 19thBbattalion until 3rd May 1917 when he was wounded in action and sent to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right foot.

He returned to his unit on 28th March 1918 but was wounded a second time a few days later on 8th April.  He was again evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left arm.

James was returned to Australia in February 1919 and discharged on 11th May 1919.
