Herbert Caldwell Maclean
Herbert Maclean (Service No 506) was born in Dapto, N.S.W.
At enlistment Herbert was single, 36 years old and was a grazier. He nominated his sister, Mrs A Macpherson, of Rylstone, N.S.W. as his next of kin.
Herbert embarked from Sydney on HMAT A74 Marathon as Company Quartermaster Seargent with B Company, 33rd Battalion on 4th May 1916. His rank at embarkation implies he may have had previous service, however there is no information to that effect on his enlistment papers.
Herbert arrived in England on 9th July 1916 and attended a Messing School in England before going to France on 21st November 1916.
On 8th January 1917 his rank was reverted to Sergeant at his own request.
Herbert saw service on the Western Front until 7th June 1917 when his battalion was involved in the attack at Messines and he was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his right buttock/thigh.
Herbert was repatriated to Australia in December 1917 and discharged medically unfit after further treatment in Australia on 9th August 1918.
