Robert Pattinson
Private Robert Pattinson (Service No 1606) was born in Bishop Auckland England about 1888.
At the time of enlistment, Robert was single, 26 years of age and employed as a miner in Bellambi. Robert embarked on HMAT A49, Seang Choon, with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements on 11th February 1915 for Egypt.
On arrival he was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April 1915 with A Company. Robert was wounded in action on 29th May 1915 and was evacuated to 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital for the treatment of a gun shot wound to his right side.
Robert arrived back at Gallipoli, Turkey on 4th August 1915 and fought in the Battle of Lone Pine. After the evacuation from Gallipoli, Robert was sent to the Western Front in France with D Company arriving on 31st March 1916 where he saw fighting at the Battle of Pozieres.
Robert was recommended for the Military Medal on 30th July 1916. The recommendation for his Military Medal reads: At Pozieres, France, on 26th July 1916, he displayed bravery in collecting wounded under heavy fire and carrying them to safety. He carried on this work during a most intense bombardment and was instrumental in saving the lives of many wounded.This award was published in the London Gazette dated 21st September 1916.
Robert was repatriated to Australia in March 1918 and discharged as medically unfit on 26th July 1918.
His brother John Pattinson (service number 5159) also served and was killed in action in 1916.
