Charles West Roots
Charles Roots ( Service No 164) was born in Bendigo, Victoria. On 24th January 1914 he married Elizabeth Dodd at Enfield, NSW.
At enlistment Charles was 41 years old, worked as a tailor and lived with his family in Campbell Street, Wollongong, NSW. He embarked with A Company, 36th Battalion from Sydney on HMAT A72 Beltana on 13th May 1916.
Charles arrived in England on 9th July 1916 and went to France on 25th September 1916. He was posted to permanent base duties both in France and in England.
In August 1917 Charles was repatriated to Australia for a rest and then discharged, medically unfit, on 30th October 1917. With no reason given, his application for a pension was denied.
Charles died in Wollongong in 1948 and is buried in Woronora Memorial Park, NSW.
