Andrew Taylor
Andrew Taylor (Service No 4649), was born in Newcastle, N.S.W., about 1886.
In 1909, he married Alice Pickering.
At enlistment, he was 30 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Helensburgh, N.S.W.
Andrew embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides, with 1st Pioneer Battalion, 13th Reinforcement, on 31st October 1917. He arrived in England on 26th December 1917, and was transferred to 53rd Battalion, on 2nd January 1918. He joined the battalion in France, on 10th April 1918. Andrew saw service on the Western Front, taking part in the fighting to prevent the German breakthrough, in the spring of 1918.
Andrew was wounded in action, on 2nd May 1918, and admitted to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his right knee. He returned to his unit on 25th June 1918.
On 5th July 1918, he was wounded a second time, and evacuated to hospital in England with a severe gun shot wound to his chest.
Andrew was repatriated to Australia, in November 1918. He spent time in hospital in Australia, and was not discharged until 4th July 1920. He was discharged medically unfit.
Andrew died on 20th August 1942, leaving a widow and 4 children.
