David Shields
David Shields (Service No 3482) was born in Murchison, Victoria around 1874.
At enlistment, he was married, 40 years old, worked as a machinist and lived in Thirroul, N.S.W. He listed his wife Millie Shields of Thirroul, as his next of kin.
David embarked on HMAT A32 Themistocles, with 1st Battalion, 11th Reinforcement, on 5th October 1915. On 13th February 1916, he was transferred to 53rd Battalion, arriving in France on 28th June 1916.
David was wounded in action at Fromelles, France, on 19th July 1916, where he was treated for shell shock. He returned to his unit on 2nd August 1916. On 3rd November 1916, David was wounded in action a second time, and evacuated to hospital in England with shell shock.
He was returned to Australia in March 1917, and discharged medically unfit, on 31st July 1917.
David died in Thirroul, N.S.W., in 1951.
