Charles William Leigh Hartley
Lance Corporal Charles Hartley (Service No 5959) was born in Melbourne, Victoria.
At the time of enlistment Charles was single, 20 years of age and employed as an Analytical Chemist in Port Kembla, NSW. Charles had previously served in the Citizen Military Force in Australia.
Charles embarked on HMAT A54 - Runic with the 7th Field Company Engineers, 3rd Reinforcements 7th Field Coy Engineers on 20th January 1916 for Egypt.
Charles arrived in Egypt on 27 February 1916 and served there until 14 September 1916. He joined the 6th Field Engineers on the Western Front in France on 12 December 1916.
Charles admitted to hospital on 15th June 1917 and did not return to his unit on the Western Front until 4th August 1917.
On 9th September 1918 Charles was promoted to Lance Corporal.
Charles was hospitalised in the 3rd New Zealand General Hospital, England on 14th February 1919 and returned to Australia in May 1919 and discharged on 4th August 1919.
On 10th January 1926, Charles married Dora Williams in Port Kembla, NSW. Charles and Dora later moved to Queensland and together had 3 children.
In 1930 he was working in Gladstone, QLD as an accountant.
Charles died in 1957.
