Alfred Ernest Bertstrand Jones
Alfred Ernest Bertstrand Jones (Service No 13797), was born in Bulli, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single,18 years old, worked as a chauffeur and lived in Thirroul, N.SW. Alfred enlisted soon after his 18th birthday, already having served 5 years in the cadets.
Alfred embarked on HMAT A61 Kanowna, with Army Medical Corps, Special Reinforcements, on 29th March 1916. He arrived in England, and was posted to 4th Field Ambulance, in France, on 25th August 1916. Alfred saw service on the Western Front until 17th March 1917. He was admitted to hospital in England, with emotional issues, and repatriated to Australia, in May 1917. He was discharged medically unfit on 23rd August 1917 and granted a pension the next day.
On 23rd July 1917, a notice appeared in the paper advising a name change to Spinks.
In 1919, he married Gladys Kirchen.
Alfred enlisted in World War 2 along with two sons.
Alfred died in October 1976.
