John Young Jones (Service No 1421), was born in Wales and came to Australia with his family in 1887.

In 1901, he married Elizabeth Henry in Woonona, N.S.W. and they had 5 children.

At enlistment, he was 34 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Woonona, N.S.W. John embarked on HMAT A38 Ulysses, with Mining Corps Reinforcement 1, on 20th February 1916.

He arrived in France on 8th May 1916 and joined 2nd Tunnel Company in the field, on 29th December 1916. He saw service on the Western Front until 27th March 1917, when he was admitted to hospital dangerously ill. John was repatriated to Australia, in December 1917 and finally discharged medically unfit on 5th July 1918.

After the war he and Elizabeth had 5 more children and he worked for the Woonona Co Op store.

John died suddenly, at home, in 1940 and is buried in Bulli Cemetery, Bulli, N.S.W.
