David Kinnell (Service No 111), was born in Lochoyelly, Scotland.

He arrived in Australia with his family, in April 1911, and they settled in Helensburgh, N.S.W.

At enlistment, David was single, 18 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Helensburgh, N.S.W. He was the first of three brothers to enlist, but the only one to see active service.

David embarked on HMAT A72 Beltana, with 36th Battalion, A Company, on 13th May 1916. He arrived in England, on 9th July 1916, and joined the battalion in France, on 20th November 1916. On 7th June 1917, he was wounded in action, at Messines, Belgium, and evacuated for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left arm and right hand. David returned to his unit on 6th July 1917.

On 12th October 1917, while fighting at Passchendaele, Belgium, he was wounded a second time. David was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of a severe shrapnel wound to his left arm. He was returned to Australia in May 1919, and discharged on 12th August 1919.

In 1919, David married Mary Brownlee, in Bulli, N.S.W., and they had one child. He worked as an engine driver after the war.

David died in 1987, and is buried in Woonona, N.S.W.

His brother Alexander also served, and another brother George, enlisted in November 1918.
