James Albert Madew
James Albert Madew (Service No 2064), was born in Kiama, N.S.W. and served 2 years with the Militia.
James went to South Africa around 1900. On 3rd February 1903, he married Mary Mabel Smith, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and they had 2 children there, before returning to Australia.
At enlistment, he was married, 36 years old, worked as a telephonist and lived in Sydney, N.S.W., with his wife and 4 children. He embarked on HMAT A20 Honorata, with 2nd Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, on 10th April 1915.
He arrived in Egypt, and was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey, soon after, on 9th June 1915. His civilian skills saw him taken on as a signaller, for 2nd Battalion, on 17th June.
On 7th August 1915, during the Lone Pine Battle, James was killed in action.
James has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
