William Maguire
William Maguire (Service No 3337), was born in Clifton, N.S.W., about 1892.
At enlistment, he was single, 25 years old, worked as a wheeler and lived in Helensburgh, N.S.W. He listed his sister Margaret Hargraves, of Helensburgh, N.S.W., as his next of kin. In March 1917 he was in court for discharged a firearm at police.
William embarked on HMAT Port Melbourne A16 , with 33rd Battalion, 8th Reinforcement, on 16th July 1917. After arriving in England, he went to France, and joined 33rd Battalion on 17th January 1918. On 17th April 1918, while fighting near Amiens, France, William was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital, for treatment of gas poisoning. He returned to the front on 18th July 1918, and on 8th August 1918, he was wounded a second time but remained on duty. William was wounded a third time, on 3rd October 1918, and sent to England for treatment of concussion. He was returned to Australia in May 1919, and discharged on 3rd July 1919.
William died in Nyngan, N.S.W., in 1926.
William is commemorated on the Helensburgh Public School Roll of Honor.
