Matthew Paton
Matthew Paton (Service No 4275), was born in Hamilton, Scotland.
At enlistment, he was single, 27 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Thirroul, N.SW.
Matthew embarked on HMAT A60 Aeneas, with 3rd Battalion,13th Reinforcement, on 20th December 1915.
After arriving in Egypt, he was briefly posted to 2nd Battalion, but on 10th March 1916, he was transferred to 1st Pioneers. He arrived in France on 2nd April 1916, and served with the pioneers for the duration of the war on the Western Front.
The job of pioneers was to build and repair roads and dig the trenches usually under heavy fire. On 11th April 1919, Matthew was granted special leave to attend a course in Scotland. He returned to Australia in October 1919, and was discharged on 9th January 1920.
In 1926, he married Minnie Ferris, in Sydney, N.S.W.
Matthew died in 1966, and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Rookwood, N.S.W.
