Samuel Patrick (Service No 5174), was born in Market Weighton, Yorkshire, England about 1887.

At enlistment, he was single, 28 years old, worked as a crane driver and lived in Port Kembla, N.S.W.

Samuel embarked on HMAT Nestor A71, with 2nd Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, on 9th April 1916.

He arrived in Egypt on 4th May 1916, and was transferred to 54th Battalion, on 24th May 1916, serving with them on the Western Front. Samuel arrived in France on 29th June 1916, but did not join the battalion until 3rd August 1916, and so missed the Battle of Fromelles.

On 2nd January 1917, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Samuel was wounded in action on 13th May 1918, and was transferred to hospital in England, after being gassed.

Samuel requested a discharge from London, and this was granted on 26th April 1919.
