John Winters (Service No 5913),  was born in Quebec, Canada, around 1877.

At enlistment he was single, 38 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Scarborough, N.S.W. John listed a friend, Mrs Burrows, of Scarborough, N.S.W. as his next of kin.

John embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with 20th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, on 7th October 1916. He arrived in England on 21st November 1916, but was admitted to hospital with bronchitis, on 21st December 1916.

John was repatriated to Australia in May 1917, and discharged medically unfit on 17th August 1917, suffering from debility and emphysema.

John received a welcome home at Scarborough, N.S.W., in July 1917.
