Oswald Sherman (Service No 7859) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. around 1887.

At enlistment Oswald was single, 34 years old, worked as a miner, and lived at Balgownie, N.S.W.  Oswald's enlistment papers indicate that he had a speech impediment. 

He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT A71 Nestor with Tunnel Companies (Sept 1916-Feb 1918 Reinforcements) on 21st November 1917.  The troops arrived in England on 2nd February 1918 and Oswald joined 1st Tunnelling Company in France on 16th April 1918.

Oswald saw service on the Western Front. He returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged on 20th September 1919.

Like his brother Edgar (Service No 5771), Oswald did not marry. He returned to work at the Corrimal mine in N.S.W.and died in Wollongong Hospital in 1945.

Oswald's service is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
