Arthur Hanley (Service No 2520) was born in Sydney around 1882.

At enlistment, Arthur was living in Perth.  He was single, 30 years old, and a teacher.  He listed his mother, of Helensburgh, N.S.W. as next of kin.

He embarked from Perth on HMAT A8 Argyllshire with 44th Battalion, 5th Reinforcements on 9th November 1916.  He arrived in England on 10th January 1917 where he served until going to France on 28th November 1917.

Arthur joined 44th Battalion in the field on 5th December and saw service on the Western Front until admitted to hospital with debility on 22nd April 1918.

After he recovered he was attached to cadre staff in England on 15th August.  During his time with the AIF Arthur was promoted to Corporal, and also served as Acting Sergeant before reverting back to ranks.

Arthur returned to Australia in December 1918 and was discharged medically unfit on 8th March 1919.

In 1928 he married Alice Bodell in Sydney; the Arthur & Alice did not have children.

Arthur moved to Canberra in 1932 where he worked as an English Master. He was a member of the Australian War Memorial Board and his local RSL.

Arther died in Canberra Hospital after a long illness and is buried in Woden Cemetery.
