John McAulay (Service No 9187) was born in Cullen Bullen, N.S.W.  In 1913 he married Martha Proud and when he embarked for overseas duty he was leaving Martha and two children.

At enlistment John was 25 years old, worked as a clerk and the family lived at Woonona, N.S.W.   John embarked from Sydney on HMAT A61 Kanowna with the Dermatological Hospital Unit on 22nd December 1915. He arrived in Egypt in February 1916 and served in Egypt until he went to England on 28th September 1916 with the hospital.

John was promoted to Corporal on 24th April 1917.

On 11th February 1918 he was admitted to hospital suffering from influenza.

On 20th July 1919 John was promoted to Warrant Officer 1.

John returned to Australia in September 1919 as an invalid. He was discharged from the AIF on 12th February 1920.

John and Martha had another child and the family moved to Victoria where he died in 1970.
