John Organ (Service No 5191) was born in Wollongong, NSW.

When he enlisted, John was single, 21 years old, worked as a miner and lived at Mount Keira, NSW; he had served 4 years in the Senior Cadets.  John had previously enlisted on 29th September 1915 but was discharged a few days later at his parents request.  

He embarked from Sydney on SS Makarini with 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcements on 1st April 1916.  The troops arrived in Egypt on 2nd May 1916 and John joined 1st Battalion in France on 27th July 1916.

John saw service on the Western Front in 1916 but spent a lot of 1917 in hospital sick.  He returned to his unit on 26th December 1917 and served until he was wounded in action on 18th September 1918.  He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his right leg.

John was finally returned to Australia in October 1919 and admitted to 4th Australian General Hospital for more treatment. He was finally discharged medically unfit on 3rd January 1921 with chronic otitis media.

In 1922 he married Vera Woodward.

John died in 1977 and is buried at Woronora Cemetery, NSW.

John's brother William also served.
