John Hugh Parker (Service No 5176) was born in Bulli, N.S.W., and had served 3 years in the Militia before enlisting.

He was single, 26 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Woonona, N.S.W.

John embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor, with 2nd Battalion,16th Reinforcement, on 9th April 1916. He arrived in Egypt on 1st May 1916, and was transferred to 54th Battalion, on 24th May 1916. He arrived in France on 29th June 1916, and took part in the Battle of Fromelles, France. On 3rd August 1916, he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital for treatment of multiple gun shot wounds to his arms, face and left eye.

He returned to his unit on 20th December 1916, and served on the Western Front. He was wounded a second time on 27th April 1918, and evacuated to hospital for treatment of gas.

Whilst recovering in Scotland, John met Annabella Young, and they married in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th January 1918.

They returned to Australia in July 1919, and he was discharged on 17th January 1920, medically unfit.

John returned to Woonona, N.S.W., and he and Annabella raised 8 children.

John died in 1960.
