Alfred Parker
Alfred Parker (Service No 23) was born in Stroud, England and came to Australia some time after 1911.
Alfred was employed as a miner, lived at Helensburgh, N.S.W. when he enlisted; he had served 6 years with the 4th Gloucester Regiment. On his enlistment papers, Alfred stated his age as 32 and that he was married, but documents in his NAA papers contain an extract of a marriage certificate between Alfred and Karen Aldridge, and which took place in Stroud but on 26th December 1918,and Alfred's age on the Marriage Certificate is recorded as 22 years!
Alfred nominated Mrs A Parker of Stroud as his next of kin.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A16 Star of Victoria with 1st Light Horse Regiment, Headquarters on 20th October 1914. The troops arrived in Egypt in December and Alfred arrived on Gallipoli on 9th May 1915.
He saw service on Gallipoli and in Egypt and after the evacuation of Gallipoli he was transferred to the Light Horse Postal unit and was given leave to England in 1918.
Alfred was returned to Australia, with his wife and 2 children, arriving on 27th March 1919, and discharged medically unfit from the AIF on 11th December 1919.
