John Reed (Service No 4521), was born in Spennymoor, England around 1892, and came to Australia some time after 1911.

At enlistment he was single, 24 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Balgownie, N.S.W.

John embarked on HMAT A71 Nestor, with 18th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement, on 9th April 1916. After arriving in England, he joined the 18th Battalion in France, on 23rd September 1916, and saw service on the Western Front with C Company, followed by A Company.

He was wounded in action on 26th May 1917, receiving a shrapnel wound to his eye, returning to duty the next day. John was wounded a second time on 16th September 1917, and evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his buttocks. Whilst in England, John went AWOL for a few days. He returned to France, and duty, on 31st August 1918.

John was wounded a third time on 4th October 1918, and was evacuated to 58th Casualty Clearing Station for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his abdomen. He succumbed to his wounds on 4th October, 1918.

John is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France, Plot VI, Row F, Grave 20.
