John Rudkin
John Rudkin (service No 2734), was born in Wollongong, N.S.W., around 1888.
At enlistment, he was single, 25 years old, worked as a plumber and was a member of the Wollongong Rifle Club.
John embarked on HMAT A54 Runic, with 1st Battalion, 8th Reinforcement, on 9th August 1915. He arrived in Egypt and went to Gallipoli with 1st Battalion, on 4th November 1915, serving there until the evacuation of Gallipoli.
On 10th March 1916, John was transferred to1st Pioneer Battalion, A Company, and arrived in France on 2nd April 1916. On 19th August 1916, he was wounded, and admitted to hospital for treatment of a shell injury to his back. John returned to duty on 24th August 1916, and saw service on the Western Front, until 9th September 1917, when he was wounded in action, a second time. He was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of gun shot wounds to both hands.
John was returned to Australia in February 1918, and discharged medically unfit, on 23rd May 1918, due to the injury to his left hand.
He remained in Wollongong, N.S.W., and was mentioned in the local papers, in relation to workplace accidents at the school and hospital.
John is commemorated on the Wollongong War Memorial.
