John Henry Owen
John Owen (Service No 2003) was born in London, England. He had previously served 4 years with the Middlesex Territorials.
John arrived in Sydney in 1913 and at the time of enlistment was single, 22 years of age and employed as an Umbrella Maker in Keiraville, NSW.
John embarked on HMAT A55 - Kyarra with the 3rd Battalion, 5th reinforcements on 13 April 1915. He arrived in Egypt and on 14 June 1915 and joined the 3rd Battalion, B Company, 6th Platoon in Gallipoli as a stretcher bearer.
On 7 August 1915, he left his stretcher and picked up a rifle to take part in the charge at Nek in Gallipoli. He was struck by bullets in the hand and chest while taking part in the charge and and was killed in action about 20 yards in front of the Turkish trenches.
He is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey.
