John Owens (Service No 559) was born in Holyhead, Wales in 1867.

At the time of enlistment John was single, 42 years of age and employed as a miner in Wollongong. John lowered his age to enlist.

John landed in Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April 1915 with 3rd Battalion, D Company.

John was mentioned in despatches for his conspicuous gallantry under heavy fire as a stretcher bearer between 25 April and 5 May 1915.

On 4 June 1915, John was admitted to hospital in Gallipoli but returned to duty on 1 July 1915.

John was killed in action at Lone Pine and is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery. His age is recorded as 47 years.

John's Mention in Despatches was awarded and listed in the London Gazette dated 5 November 1915.
